THE STANDARD
THE BULLDOG CLUB OF UTAH
MARCH-APRIL-MAY 2008
WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON?
At the February Board of Directors meeting, held on February12,2008 there
was a discussion regarding funds for rescue. It was unanimously agreed,
by those present, that as a club, we NEED to pay Rescue’s expenses.
It was agreed that, if an adoptive family is able to cover or contribute
to the dog’s “rescue bill,” that would be great. Shar
has recently had a couple of “train wreck” rescues that have
severely depleted the Rescue bank account. There was more discussion and
it was again agreed that the raffle to be held at the Specialty on April
30 would be to benefit rescue. It seems that we are getting more and more
rescue dogs; unfortunately, many of them do not have happy endings.
The board members that were present for the board meeting then waited
for the rest of the club to show up for the General Membership meeting.
It is a good thing that we all had reasons to go home or we’d still
be waiting. Not a single member showed up. How tremendously disappointing.
It was particularly disappointing because Shar had gone to a good bit
of trouble in preparing a demonstration on canine dental health. And,
we had planned on finalizing the club’s logo.
SO, WHAT ELSE HAS BEEN GOING ON?
At the next Board meeting, it was decided that since no one cared, the
Board would chose a new logo for the Bulldog Club of Utah. You will find
it elsewhere in the newsletter. And, it is a done deal. Too bad if you
had a great idea.
RESCUE REPORT
Rescue is, unfortunately, busy. Shar has several coming in: one whose
owner died and needs a place to be; the others may have “issues.”
“Bogey” has found a home: since he is nine, has figured out
the program at Susan Tibbitts’ home, and she feels that he should
not be uprooted again, he is staying put there. He is making progress
with his hearing and vision problems, with just a little effort. Amazingly,
the dog that could hardly get up and down the stairs the first night is
now bounding up and down those stairs and leaping out of his crate.
WE ARE LIVE!!!!!!
Our intrepid webmaster, Josh Schreiner and his able assistant Rebekah
have persevered and navigated all of the roadblocks to get the website
up and running. Check it out for yourself: bulldogclubofutah.org. Pretty
good, huh? Please remember to send photos, information, etc. to Josh at:
joshs@sisna.com. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to thank
Josh and Rebekah: it has been a real headache for them , as well as a
huge amount of work. And it isn’t exactly a paid position…
RECENT EVENTS
On Saturday, May 10th, a number of bulldogs and bulldoggers gathered at
the Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden. The weather was perfect for the dogs
and their people, as they wandered about the grounds, dodging dinos. In
attendance were Shar and Udell Kynaston and their son Dustin and his children,
Kriss Durrant and Becca Ledesma with 2 puppies, the Faldalens, Pat and
Les Hansen and Pat’s daughter Teresa , 2 dogs and maybe some grandchildren.
Also present were the Leaches and their daughter; Scott and Marilyn Thiessen,
with 2 dogs and Alma Rivera and Paco de la Cruz, who also brought a dog.
Our host Kevin Ireland was the short-order cook, and Shar schlepped food
to our participants. The park has plenty for the kids to do, and the bulldogs
didn’t seem the least bit bothered by the growling dinosaurs, and
got to mingle and “socialize” with each other. It is great
to see some of the faces that we haven’t seen since the last free
lunch…Everyone agreed this was a location to which we definitely
hope to be invited back. Our thanks to Kevin for securing the park for
us to use!
Next meeting
We are a little out of sync on our meeting schedule, but rest assured
that your officers and board of directors will be planning something definitely
fun, possibly educational, and most likely involving food. We ARE planning
to do another “Canine Good Citizen Test” in
September. Those of you who came and watched last year saw that it wasn’t
at all intimidating, so plan on bringing your dog(s) this year. More information
will be forthcoming soon!

A WORD OR TWO ABOUT THE SPECIALTY
Our annual specialty shows, “Big Bulldog Love”, were held
on Wednesday April 30th, at the South Jordan Equestrian Park. We had 11
sweepstakes entries to be judged by Mr. Mark White of Chino Hills,California.
In the first of the two regular shows, Mr. Mike Brunk, of Grand Junction,
Co., had an entry of 40, and his wife Mary had an entry of 42 bulldogs
in the second show. Once again, we had entries from far and wide: Texas,
Colorado, California, Washington, and our own local dogs.
Of course, the high point of the whole deal was Pat Hansen’s hospitality
tent. Coffee, donuts and fruit in the morning Wednesday and Thursday,
and her trademark fabulous lunch on Wednesday. Pat and her hospitality
team of Kriss Durrant and Becca Ledesma served up 2 kinds of chili, pulled
pork, coleslaw and all the fixin’s. And then, when they weren’t
feeding people, they were arranging and organizing the raffle and silent
auction items. And then, when she wasn’t doing ANYTHING else, Pat
ran in and showed her dogs. Unfortunately, the weather was less than cooperative,
and so the crowds were thin, and the girls were seriously cold! Once again,
it is our faithful, stalwart members making everything work. Not to let
us down, there was the usual problem with electricity. Not to worry: former
members Todd Thornton and Pat Samples to the rescue! Todd loaned us his
generator and Pat loaned us his expertise and helped straighten out the
electricity. And , one more time, Terry Tuke provided us with the tables
and chairs for the tent. Where would we be without him??
As the specialty chair, I’d like to thank Pat and her gang for all
of their hard work. It takes a lot of long hours, especially since she
also made the goody bags, and a bunch of stuff for the raffle and auction.
Les Hansen, John Faldalen & Steve Pelovsky were there to help with
the tent set-up, in the windstorm, on Tuesday afternoon. Many thanks to
those of you who contributed to the raffle and silent auction, either
by donating items or by buying raffle tickets or bidding on the items.
We raised roughly $600 for Rescue. Many thanks also go to those who contributed
to our trophy fund or bought advertising:
Ralph and Kriss Durrant
Hanna & Troy Baskerville
Frank & LeAnn Leach
Dr. Aaron & Traci Barney
Alma Rivera & Paco DeLa Cruz
Les & Pat Hansen
Shar & Udell Kynaston
John & Carolyn Faldalen
Paul & Lauri Stewart
And also of note are the non-members who supported us:
Midvalley Animal Clinic
Richard Seeno
Julie & Tom Babcock
Steve & Donalee Pelovsky
Pat Buchanan & Lucy Deschenes
Debbi & Lance Golding
Lillian Tiffany
Floyd Thompson
Bulldog Club of Philadelphia
Bulldog Club of Las Vegas
Bulldog Club of Denver
Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle
Motherlode Bulldog Club
We would also like to thank Dr. Aaron Barney who, once again, gave up
his day off to be our veterinarian for the entire day. Once again, we
were fortunate to have nothing for him to do. Thanks also go to Trina
Henrie, our ring steward. She kept the ring running smoothly and correctly
all day. Trina is a member of Mount Ogden Kennel Club.
As you can see, there was plenty of opportunity for all of our club members
to contribute and be a part of the specialty, even if they don’t
“do dog shows”. If you just couldn’t possibly get out
to the tent to see the raffle items, buy raffle tickets, bid on the auction
items or otherwise support the club, well, it sucks to be you. You missed
some great stuff, hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind items, (like Dennis Erickson’s
hand-made walking sticks, or a Pat Hansen original lamp, a really nifty
bulldog print….). And you missed a terrific opportunity to support
Rescue.
Oh-thanks to the show secretary, Liz Coates. What a miserable, thankless
job! Hours of tedious work, only to have someone call and change their
entries for the fourth time. (Sort of makes you want to volunteer, eh?)
But once again, it is another job that, without someone to do it, there’s
no specialty.
So thanks to every one again! For some reason, we’re already planning
next year’s show. What is wrong with us?! Plan on joining the volunteers
are always welcome!
