THE BULLDOG CLUB OF UTAH

January 2010

A Word from Dave
Dear Friends and Members of the Bulldog Club of Utah,
I look back with pride at the depth and responsiveness to which members of our club have responded to the call to serve. I am also proud of the Board and individuals we have been able to support and the work they have accomplished.
As we look to the future, I feel we need to focus our energies to have an even greater impact.
1. We have a youth movement in the club, and with bright young children a chance to secure the future of our club and our passion “The Bulldog.”
2. Our rights as responsible pet owners are being challenged. We need to remain vigilant, aware and informed about legislation changes brought by the vocal few, that threaten our present ability to keep and promote the best interests of our purebred Bulldogs.
3. Continue to put on the best damn Specialty around.
As we build on the achievements and lessons of those before us, we are committed to synergistically working to achieve these goals.
We whole-heartedly invite your ideas and participation.
Sincerely,
Dave Johnson, President

What’s Been Going On?
Well, way back in October, the Bulldog Club held it’s annual Election Meeting and Halloween Costume Party. Pat Hansen had lots of fun games for the Bulldogs and the kids, and as usual, we caused a bit of traffic jam in Murray Park—everyone LOVES the Bulldogs! New members Sheri Martinez and Jim and Katherine Seeberger came to join the fun, as well a a number of “interested parties.” Pat and her hospitality crew (aka Pat’s daughters) brought pizzas and everyone else brought their potluck contribution, thus assuring that, once again, we had waaaay too much food. But it was GREAT food.
When the dust had cleared, the new officers and Board of Directors were introduced:
Dave Johnson, President

Becklyn Thee, V.P.
Liz Coates, Secretary

Susan Tibbitts, Treasurer
Shar Kynaston, Darilyn Johnson, Vinnie Manurino,
Kriss Durrant and Josh Schreiner
Thanks to all who agreed to serve for 2010!
Many thanks also go to those who served so admirably and capably in 2009!

Vice-President Becklyn Thee has agreed to act as our our legislative liason. She will keep us abreast of, and informed about, any new legislation, locally and statewide, that may affect our ability to keep our dogs. She is already “digesting” the impact that Las Vegas’ mandatory spay and neuter ordinance may have on us all one day. Keep an eye peeled for updates from Becklyn.
Josh is also still our steadfast Webmaster. Check out all the great stuff that he and Rebekah have put up there for us—lots of photographs from the last year. We can always use more photos of dogs, so send yours to Josh. Your dog can be a star!

DUES ARE DUE!
According to our bylaws, membership dues are due for renewal on February 1st, and considered delinquent on February 28th. If you have not already done so, please renew your membership. If you wish to make no changes to your membership category, please send your check for $10/person to the Treasurer:
Susan Tibbitts
14490 Majestic Oaks Ln.
Herriman, Utah 84096-4642
Please don’t let your membership lapse! If you do, you’ll miss out on all of our fun activities, the fabulous newsletter, and have to go through that embarrassing business of being voted on as a “new” member……

COMING EVENTS
On Saturday February 13, 2010, at 4 p.m., the Bulldog Club of Utah’s General Membership meeting will be held at the home of Susan Tibbitts, in Herriman. We will have a guest speaker, from MidValley Animal Clinic speak to us about the growing problem of “Bladder Stones in Bulldogs”, how to recognize the signs that your dog might be suffering from them, how to treat your dog for stones and how to avoid having stones show up again in your breeding program. Since the latest statistics indicate that something over 16% of all Bulldogs are experiencing some sort of stone-related problem, it is a subject that we should all be concerned about. A late lunch/early dinner will be served; please feel free to bring your favorite beverage, snack or dessert. Please R.S.V.P. to Susan Tibbitts (801.571.9248; eviltwin9@q.com) so that we may have adequate seating. Please feel free to invite your dog-y friends, even if they do not have a Bulldog, the poor things. Call or e-mail for directions.
Saturday March 13 ,2010 Easter Parade at a location & time yet to be determined, but rest assured, it will be a lot of fun. More details to follow. Call Pat Hansen for info: 801.209.9293-or check the website.
Junior Showmanship Clinic: We will be holding a clinic/demonstration for our up and coming, aspiring Junior Handlers! If you have kids or grandchildren, age 9 -18, that are interested in joining in the family craziness of showing dogs, this will be the perfect opportunity to find out what it is all about. We are uncertain of the date or location just yet, but it will be after everyone’s Easter break, and before the Specialty and Cluster Shows. If you are not familiar with Junior Showmanship, it differs from the regular classes in that the dog is not judged, but how well the handler presents the dog to the Judge. If you have a Junior that might be interested, please let Susan Tibbitts know (801.571.9248; eviltwin9@q.com) The clinic will be free of charge, although we would absolutely never turn down a donation of dog food or cash to our Rescue Fund.
Wednesday May 5, 2010: The Bulldog Club of Utah’s Seventh and Eighth Annual Specialty Shows: The show committees are forming, but we can always use more help. If you can offer your time or expertise, raffle items or $$$$$, please contact the Show Secretary Liz Coates (435.899.1330; crunch_7@gotsky.com). There’s always lots to do and never enough bodies. C’mon—it’ll be FUN!

RESCUE REPORT: Rescue has been relatively busy lately. December saw two owner-surrenders in one week.
“Jake” came from out in the Uintah Basin. His people felt that with the addition of two children to the family, Jake was not receiving the attention that they wanted him to have. Arrangements were made, and Jake was dropped off and then delivered to his new owner, Chris Houston and his family. Chris is another co-worker of Becklyn Thee’s (you might remember that “Miss Daisy” went to Raymond Allison, who also works with Becklyn). We understand that Jake has taken over the Houston family and household, and has made new friends at the dog park, become the office mascot, and succeeded in becoming totally spoiled, all in fairly short order.

Our thanks to the Houston family for opening their home and hearts to Jake, and a very special thanks to the Bird family, for wanting the best for their dog, and caring enough about him to see that he went to a responsible home.
At the same time, Rescue received a call from some folks in Park City, who had recently been relocated here after spending at least 7 years in Dubai. Their nearly 7-year old girl, “Betty” decided that 7 years was enough to share her people; unfortunately, she let her people know that by starting fights with her housemate of the last 7 years. Rather than continuing to keep them separated and hope for the best, they made the tremendously difficult choice to place Betty.
Betty is a great little dog! Originally from South Africa, she is the type of Bulldog from about 100 years ago—40-ish pounds, not too big, not too heavily boned, which is probably why at 7 years old, she is in terrific shape, and very healthy. She most definitely deserves people of her own, with no other dogs. She loves to ride in the car, go for walks and gets very happy when folks come to see her. Cats and children do not seem to be a problem for her. Unfortunately, she started having seizure. Medication seems to have those under control, although she will need to stay on it for the rest of her life.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in giving Betty a home with people of her own, please call Susan Tibbitts (801.571.9248)
to arrange for a meeting. She REALLY wants and deserves a family of her own.

Some sad rescue news: Maddie ,the very over-weight 8 year old girl that we picked up from the Humane Society of Utah, did not survive until she found a new home. She died in her sleep soon after moving to Liz Coates home for some “rehab”.
Shar Kynaston has also taken in several dogs lately, victims of the financial times and life changes. If you are interested, please contact Shar to see how her inventory is doing……

Rescue has also recently received some very generous donations from Bob Pantremeuhl and Susan Himes(Betty’s owners) and also from Beth Lendrum, who is truly a “friend” of the Bulldog Club of Utah.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
The Philadelphia Eagles have bestowed the “Ed Block Courage Award” upon he who must not be named, aka Michael Vick. Since the award is given to a player on each of the 32 NFL teams, with each team’s recipient chosen by the players, it is perhaps not as “special” as it might seem. Who knew that it took courage to electrocute and drown dogs for not performing “adequately” in the fighting ring; or for using smaller dogs as “bait”? The AKC has written to Jeff Lurie, the CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles, expressing their disgust with the Eagles choice. You can view the AKC’s letter online at akc.org. If you feel that this is a poor choice as a role model, you may also want to contact Mr. Lurie. His information can be found on the AKC’s letter.
Now that Mr. Vick has paid his “debt to society” for his interstate gambling errors, and has “seen the error of his ways” about the dogs and has become a “sincere” advocate for dogs, he has also been rewarded with a program on “Black Entertainment Television”, documenting his newfound awareness. Spare me.
If you are as appalled by these actions as we are, you may want to consider letting the sponsors and advertisers for NFL Sport and BET that you will no longer be purchasing their products or watching their programs.-----Editor
